Poland initiates creation of Assembly for Visegrad Four, Romania and Ukraine

Poland initiates the creation of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly representing thVisegrad Group countries (Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary), and two neighbouring Carpathian countries Ukraine and Romania.

This was reported by Marek Kuchcinski, Marshal of the Sejm (Polish parliament) at a local development forum, which took place in Truskavets (a city in western Ukraine's Lviv region), on June 26.

"We want to offer our Czech and Hungarian partners to create a joint Assembly not only in the format of four countries but including Ukraine and Romania", said Kuchcinski.

According to him, the Carpathian countries should strengthen their cooperation to develop the infrastructure and improve the economic situation in the region. Ukraine, in particular, should increase a number of checkpoints on the border with its western neighbours - E.U. members.

"At the moment, this cooperation is very weak. We need to set a goal - to increase a number of border crossing checkpoints, improve the infrastructure between Ukraine and Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania, Ukraine and Poland ", said the speaker.

Kuchcinski said that Poland obtains the Visegrad Group Presidency on July 1, 2016.

The Inter-Parliamentary Assembly concept will be discussed at the Economic Forum in Krynica-Zdroj (Poland) on 8 to 10 September 2016. More than 3,000 guests from Europe, Central Asia and the U.S. are expected to attend the Forum.

"Even considering a war in Ukraine, we want to strengthen this cooperation. We want our cooperation between parliaments to be one of the most powerful tools that will impact NATO and other countries to further influence Russia and make it cease its aggressive actions", said Kuchcinski.
