The Republic of Moldova: the former premier Vlad Filat sentenced to 9 years of imprisonment
The former premier of the Republic of Moldova Vlad Filat was sentenced on Monday to nine years of imprisonment, according to the news site Unimedia.
At the same time, the former Moldovan premier will have to pay a fine of 60 thousand lei (Moldavian lei) and he will not have the right to have a public position for a period of 5 years.
The sentence which could be attacked by appeal, was given by the magistrates from the Buiucani Tribunal, after the hearing of the defence and prosecution.
Vlad Filat considered himself as not guilty and stated that the decision of the magistrates is illegal.
In his turn, the prosecutor who managed the file where the former premier Vlad Filat was discussed says that the decisions of the judges is too mild by comparison to the prejudice which was brought to the state by Vlad Filat.
The former premier Vlad Filat was detained on 15 October and later arrested. Filat is accused of passive corruption and influence trafficking after the businessman Ilan Shor stated that he gave over years money and goods worth 250 million dollars. Vlad Filat denies the accusations stating that he is the victim of a political fight organised by the prime-vice chairman of PD Vlad Plahotniuc who suspended himself.
