On Saturday, the Romanian President will be attending a meeting on Afghanistan of the participating states in the Resolute Support mission, a NAC meeting and a NATO Commission — Ukraine/NAC meeting at presidential level. He is also scheduled to give a press statement on Saturday.

"The summit's agenda is steered mainly toward adopting measures to consolidate the NATO defence and deterrence posture amidst a multiplication of security challenges, as well as projecting stability on the eastern and southern neighbourhoods of NATO," the Romanian Presidential Administration reported in a press statement on Thursday.

In terms of consolidating the defence and deterrence posture, President Iohannis is expected to underscore the importance of the commitments taken at the previous summit meeting in Wales being fully met, as well as the need for NATO to continue its adaptation, including by providing a balanced and proportional advanced presence over the entire eastern flank.

At the same time, Romania will be advocating increased attention being attached to the Black Sea region, as well as to the NATO regional efforts to ensure stability and security being supported.

"Romania is supporting the adoption of a NATO-EU joint declaration that will contribute toward the structuring of the strategic partnership between the two organisations, while also supporting the NATO efforts to consolidate the defence capabilities of the NATO partners. To this end, the summit will place special emphasis on NATO deepening cooperation with its eastern partners, especially Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova," reads the presidential statement.

Iohannis will also advocate the continuation of the open doors policy and hail Montenegro being invited to join as the 29th NATO member state.

At the NATO summit meeting in Warsaw, Romania's commitment to strengthen security in the Euro-Atlantic space will be reconfirmed as well as its commitment to contribute toward stabilisation in Afghanistan and the efforts to combat ISIL/Daesh.

On Sunday, Iohannis is scheduled to meet his Polish counterpart. "Talks with Poland's President Andrzej Duda will focus on the adoption of measures at the highest level to deepen and enlarge the strategic partnership between Romania and Poland as well as the most efficient ways to continue the regional initiatives started by the two countries," the statement says.
