Romania might sign contract to buy five F-16s from Portugal this year

Romanian Defence Minister Gabriel Les has said that Romania might sign the contract to buy five F-16 aircraft from the Portuguese state this year, doubting that the country might purchase F-35 aircraft from the U.S., arguing “they are little bit too much” for Romania at this moment.

Les has announced in a press conference on Thursday the conclusion of the documents with the Portuguese partner for the acquisition of five F-16s to complete Romania’s squadron.

The documents for the five F-16s are already sent to the Portuguese partner. Things are in the home stretch. I strongly believe it is possible to sign the contract this year,” minister Les said.

He could not tell the price difference between a second-hand modernised plane and a new one, only mentioning that Romania will choose the F-16s instead of the F35s provided by the American partner.
