Salad with pike eggs from Tulcea, the eighth Romanian produce acknowledged and protected in the EU
The European Commission approved on Friday the application of ‘ Salad of pike eggs from Tulcea in Romania in the Register of protected geographical indications (IGP).
According to a press release of the EC, the salad of pike eggs from Tulcea is a ‘ cream based on sunflower oil, white as colour, obtained from fish eggs in mixture with bubble water and lemon juice’.
‘It is produced in the Tulcea region, which includes the Reserve of the Danube Delta. ‘ the salad with pike eggs from Tulcea’ has the specific taste of the pike eggs, completed and nuanced by that of the fish eggs from the Danube Delta, as a result of the process of maturation and salting. ‘ The salat with pike eggs from Tulcea’ is a produce which uses mainly raw materials from the region, creating a strong connection with natural environment of the Danube Delta’ the EC press release says.
‘The salad with pike eggs from Tulcea’ is an example of the local tradition of preparing fish, which evolved from the gathering and consumption of raw eggs (in the 19th century) to the preparation in the modern cuisine (in the 20th century). This new nomination will join the 1,760 food produce already protected.
