The government rejected the draft referring to the regulation of the judicial statute of the Royal House
The government decided, in the meeting of Wednesday to give a negative decision to the legislative initiative referring to the regulation of the judicial statute of the Royal House, stated governmental sources.
On 29 December 2017, premier Mihai Tudose stated that the government will give a negative decision to the draft law regarding the regulation of the judicial statute of the Royal House, stating that Elisabeta Palace was given for use to the King Mihai as former head of stte, not to his inheriters.
‘With all respect for King Mihai, for what he represented in history, for what he was till his death. He was a head of state. But to give rights to the inheriters of a head of state .. Forgive me, but we have former heads of state who have livining inheriters (…).We are not monarchy. Romania, as the constitution says is a republic. We have acknowledged some merits to the former head of state –King Mihai. To acknowledge that there is some kind of crown here, forgive me, but I don’t feel like, as I have no legal right. The Royal House is a foundation. They want that this foundation get the statute of a foundation for national interest. I don’t agree with it’ the prime-minister said.
He showed that the members of the Royal House could rent Elisabeta Palace, if they want it, and he discussed with the RA-APPS representatives to make an offer.
‘Romania is not a monarchy but a republic. The Elisabeta Palace must go back to the Romanian state. The members of the Royal House can stay in Savarsin or in any other place’ Tudose said, in December.
The draft regarding the regulation of the judicial statute of the Royal House was presented to the parliament by the speaker of the senate Calin Popescu-Tariceanu and the speaker of the Deputies’ Chamber, Liviu Dragnea on 7 November 2017.
