In 2015, crop production decreased for most crops, mainly due to unfavourable climatic conditions

  • In 2015, compared to the previous year, the cultivated area decreased for cereal grains, sugar beet and potatoes. ? Crop production decreased for most crops, except for dried pulses

  • Crop production decrease was mainly caused by unfavourable climatic conditions

Romania's cereal production decreased last year by almost 14 pct to 19.04 million tons from 22.07 million tons in 2014, mainly because of adverse weather conditions, shows provisional data released on Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In 2015 Romania's crop dropped for most plant categories, except for pulse crops.

Last year Romania preponderantly cultivated maize and wheat on 2.52 million hectares (47.8 pct of the total cultivated area under cereal crops) and 2.043 million hectares (38.4 pct of the total area), respectively. The area cultivated with grain cereals totaled last year 5.319 million hectares, by 124,000 hectares less from the 5.44 million hectares cultivated the year before.

According to INS, the grain maize production was of 8.87 million tons, down 26 percent from the almost 12 million tons registered in 2104; the country's wheat production was 7.85 million tons, having inched 3.5 percent from the 7.58 million tons harvested in 2014.

Last year 2.52 million hectares were planted with grain maize, with only 15,000 hectares more than in 2014 (+0.5 percent), while the area cultivated with wheat in 2015 was 2.043 million hectares, by 70,000 hectares less than the 2.113 million hectares under wheat crops in 2014.

Romania's barley and two-row barley production totaled 1.582 million tons in 2015, down from 1.713 million tons in 2014 and the oat crop was 364,000 tons, slightly lower than the 382,000 tons registered in the previous year. The cultivated acreage was slightly lower for both crops, standing at 462,000 hectares for barley and two-row barley and 179,000 hectares for oat.
