MCSI: there are 99 settlements under the Ro-Net project since December 31, 2015
As many as 99 human settlements are now covered by the Ro-Net project, while others, up to 783, will follow by the end of 2016, State Secretary with the Ministry of Communications and Information Society (MCSI) Horatiu Anghelescu told the 6th annual edition of the Mobile Innovation Conference in Bucharest on Wednesday.
"Currently, there are 99 settlements under the Ro-Net project since December 31, 2105. At the same time, there are some 400 building permits issued. Permits for 783 settlements are underway. The deadline for the second stage of the Ro-Net project is end 2016 and hopefully we will be on schedule thanks to our cooperation with our colleagues from the National Communications Agency (ANCOM) and [communications operator] Telekom, as the two are project concessionaires. Reception of works is over in 99 settlements. ANCOM has conducted a technical audit; all components are functioning, but they are not in operation yet. The Ro-Net provides the infrastructure, while access of the final users to it depends on Telekom," said Anghelescu.
The start of the Ro-Net project, co-funded by the European Commission from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) with a total worth of 377.8 million lei, of which 252.28 million lei is ERDF financial grants, was unveiled in mid-January 2015 by the Communications Ministry.
The distribution network should have been nearly 4,900 km long and it should have been ready in December 2015.
Telekom Communications and Telekom Mobile had been picked in a tender to implement the project by December 31, 2015.
In early November 2014, the European Commission approved its financial contribution to the Ro-Net project worth some 85.6 million euros under which 783 human settlements deemed blank areas were to be extended broadband Internet access.
