Ambassador Brummell: I hope that uncertainties at the Bucharest National Opera (ONB) will be resolved soon

UK Ambassador in Bucharest Paul Brummell voiced his hope that uncertainties at the Bucharest National Opera (ONB) will be resolved soon, expressing his delight that talented young British ballet dancers have chosen to develop careers at ONB.

"Delighted talented young British ballet dancers have chosen to develop careers at #ONB. Hope uncertainties there will be resolved soon," the British diplomat wrote on his Twitter account.

Previously, Brummell said that he was concerned with the turn of events at the Opera. "Concerned at recent developments at #Bucharest National Opera #ONB - just days after triumphant premiere of Kenneth MacMillan's Manon," the Ambassador commented.

The Bucharest National Opera underwent some tense moments after Johan Kobborg, the opera ballet coordinator, announced his resignation. On Tuesday, the ballet dancers at ONB, together with Alina Cojocaru, manifested in support of the Danish choreographer. One day later, artists of the Bucharest National Opera participated in a meeting for the support of the current management: Vlad Conta (ONB interim director) and Tiberiu Soare (deputy director).

The conflict emerged more than one week ago, when Tiberiu Soare, newly-appointed interim director of the institution, removed Kobborg's title of ONB Ballet director from the Opera's website. The choreographer then announced he would leave ONB. In reply, Tiberiu Soare said that Kobborg's position was not in the organisational chart.

Romania’s Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos and culture minister Vlad Alexandrescu promised that they would try to find solutions to solve the conflict at the Bucharest National Opera so that Danish choreographer Johan Kobborg and famous Romanian ballerina Alina Cojocaru would continue to perform on the Romanian stage.

“I think that the Bucharest National Opera needs valuable artists and performances. I’m sure that we can respect our value, and that we also can respect a remarkable artist or artistic act whether they come from Romania or from abroad,” Ciolos wrote on his Facebook page, in answer to an open letter he received from Alina Cojocaru.
