Romania recorded the lowest negative annual inflation rate in EU this March
In March 2016, Romania recorded the lowest negative annual inflation rate among the 28 member states of the European Commission: -2.4 percent versus 2.1 percent, according to data released on Thursday by the Eurostat official statistics provider of the EU.
According to Eurostat, in March 2016, negative annual rates were observed in fifteen Member States. The lowest annual rates were registered in Romania (-2.4pct), Cyprus (-2.2pct) and Bulgaria (-1.9pct).
The highest annual rates were recorded in Belgium (1.6pct), Sweden (1.2pct) and Malta (1.0pct).
Compared with February 2016, annual inflation fell in eleven member states, Romania included, remained stable in seven and rose in nine.
As far as Romania is concerned, data released early this week by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) show annual inflation in negative territory in February 2016, at - 3 percent, further down from - 2.7 percent one month previously. Against the harmonised of consumer prices, the drop was 2.4 percentage points.
Nevertheless, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) has upwardly adjusted to 1.4 percent its end-2016 inflation forecast, up 0.3 percent from the previous estimate of 1.1 percent.
