Ambassador Cord Meier-Klodt, Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office for the Transdniestrian Settlement Process had a meeting at MAE
Foreign Affairs Minister Lazar Comanescu welcomed on Tuesday Ambassador Cord Meier-Klodt, Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office for the Transdniestrian Settlement Process, on which occasion he reiterated the need to continue the engagement of all involved parties.
"The Romanian dignitary reiterated the need to continue the engagement of all involved parties in the negotiation process and reconfirmed the support for the efforts of the German chairmanship in this respect. In context, they discussed the prospects of identifying a comprehensive, fair and sustainable solution to the conflict, with the observance of the Republic of Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and ensuring, in accordance with the commitments assumed on the OSCE level, a special status for Transdniestria," a Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) release informs.
The Romanian side also highlighted the importance of the political will and a balanced approach capable to facilitate the dialogue strengthening in this case.
At the same time, Minister Comanescu hailed the sustained efforts of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) German Chairmanship-in-Office and Ambassador Cord Meier-Klodt, which materialised in the resumption after two years of the dialogue in the "5+2" format, the only official framework for regulating the conflict in a peaceful, political and negotiated manner.
The meeting with Ambassador Cord Meier-Klodt is part of the regular dialogue of the Romanian side with relevant speakers for theTransdniestrian settlement process, the MAE points out.
The "5+2" format gathers at the negotiation table representatives of Ukraine, the Russian Federation, the OSCE, the Republic of Moldova and the administration of Tiraspol, as well as of the EU and the US. The negotiation process was resumed in 2016 under the round organised in Berlin, June 2 - 3. The previous formal meeting in "5+2" format took place in Vienna, on June 5 and 6, 2014.
