Ambassador Kevin Hamilton: "Romanians deserve enhanced integrity from the institutions, public servants, and from the elected representatives"

Ambassador of Canada in Romania Kevin Hamilton had a meeting on Thursday with the head prosecutor of the National Directorate of Anticorruption (DNA), Laura Codruta Kovesi, to discuss the essential role of the DNA in promoting the rule of law in Romania, in this context he affirmed that "Romanians deserve enhanced integrity from the institutions, public servants, and from the elected representatives." 

"In a very productive meeting, I have analyzed the ways through which Canada can support the activity of the DNA, including supplying technical and judicial expertise," Ambassador Hamilton stated, quoted in a press release of the diplomatic mission.

He spoke about the DNA's role in a democratic society. 

"In any democratic society, citizens rely on the existence of some reliable institutions that protect the rule of law and work for ensuring that the public servants who get involved in corruption practices are made accountable. In this regard, DNA has an essential role for Romania," the Ambassador of Canada showed. 

The diplomat underscored the fact that DNA's activity which registers progresses is carried out in difficult circumstances. 

"I am encouraged by the progress registered by the DNA, despite the difficult circumstances which it confronted with and the active resistance on behalf of others," Ambassador Hamilton added. 

Likewise, the diplomat has expressed the hope that the evolution in this area will continue. 

"The issued reports in the last days by Transparency International and the European Commission show significant improvements registered last year. Canada hopes and expects that this trend will continue," Hamilton stated. 

The Ambassador assured the DNA's head of prosecutor that "in its quality of friend, partner, and ally of Romania, Canada will continue to manifest an active interest towards the activity of the DNA and towards the fight against corruption," the quoted source shows.
