Gorghiu criticised the vote cast by the PNL senators in the case of senator Varujan Vosganian

Co-chair of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Alina Gorghiu has criticised the vote cast by the PNL senators in the case of senator Varujan Vosganian, calling it an accident and warning that the party's MPs who fail to vote openly from now on in similar cases will find themselves in a situation where they fail to observe a decision politically committed by the entire PNL leadership.

Gorghiu's reaction came after the Senate have rejected on Thursday the request, filed by Prosecutor General Tiberiu Nitu, to approve the start of criminal investigation for senator Varujan Vosganian, former Minister of Economy, in the Romgaz case.

In turn, President Klaus Iohannis wrote on Thursday on his Facebook page that he expected the senators to vote to approve the request of the judiciary regarding the start of criminal investigation in the case of Varujan Vosganian and stated his belief that the vote in the Senate shows the necessity for change which he repeatedly showed favour for is yet to be understood.

"I expected the Senate to approve the DNA [National Anti-corruption Directorate] request to start the criminal investigation for PNL [National Liberal Party] Varujan Vosganian. The senators' vote shows that the necessity for change for which I pleaded in the consultations with parliamentary political parties, as well as in the recent speech in front of Parliament, is yet to be understood", said the head of state.

In the President's opinion, "regarding justice there is only one measure: respect towards the law, regardless of person or position".

Premier Victor Ponta on Thursday also termed the Senate vote on Varujan Vosganian's case as "a huge mistake and inconsistency."

"The Senate's vote on the Vosganian case - a huge mistake and inconsistency! The new alliance Blaga / Gorghiu / Geoana / Vanghelie unveils its priorities," the Prime Minister wrote on Twitter, citing names who front the current political trends.
