Klaus Iohannis: I invited Pope Francis to Romania again: he seemed interested if he could, he would come

 

President Klaus Iohannis stated on Saturday in a press conference held in Rome that he reiterated to Pope Francis the invitation to visit Romania in 2018 and the Pope seemed ‘ very interested’ and if it were possible he would honour the invitation and come to our country.

„ ‘Besides an exchange of protocol words which are usually delivered in such occasions, I reiterated my invitation which I had made in 2015 when on an official visit, to visit Romania in 2018. I reiterated this invitation which I made one week before in written form as well. From the very beginning he was very interested and I am convinced that all the measures will be taken, if possible, I think he will come’ stated Klaus Iohannis, asked what he discussed with Pope Francis during the visit they had.

The head of state took part in Roma at the Anniversary Summit of the EU which on Friday night was preceded by the reception of all heads of state and government by Pope Francis.

Almost two years ago, president Klaus Iohannis paid a visit to the Vatican. The president met Pope Francis for the first time and addressed the invitation to the Pope to come to Romania.

In 1999 Pope John Paul II paid a historic visit to Romania, the first of a Pope to our country, and the first time when Pope John Paul II came to an orthodox country for the majority of the people.
