Romania supports Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg's proposals in NATO 2030 reflection process

Romania is very committed to supporting the proposals of Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in the process of reflection on the future of the North Atlantic Alliance NATO 2030 and wants an increase in NATO's role both politically and militarily, said Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu upon arrival at the Brussels meeting of the member countries' foreign ministers.

The Romanian Foreign Minister pointed out that the meeting in Brussels is the first with a physical presence after the one in November 2019, being at the same time the first opportunity to meet with the new US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

However, Bogdan Aurescu stated that the most important topic on the agenda is the NATO 2030 reflection process, adding that Romania is very committed to supporting the proposals of Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

He added that, in Romania's view, this process is a good opportunity to increase the Alliance's ability to strengthen the security of the Euro-Atlantic area and that more emphasis should be placed on defence and deterrence.

He confessed that he is glad that he was the first foreign affairs minister of the Alliance who supported, in November 2019, this initiation of negotiations for a new strategic concept of NATO.

He reiterated that the pandemic has shown that resilience is very important and that it is extremely relevant and necessary to reduce our dependence on actors who do not think like us and try to influence our decision-making process both in foreign affairs and in matters of security, and at the same time to increase cooperation with partners who think like us.

Aurescu reminded, in context, that Romania announced its intention to set up a Euro-Atlantic center for resilience in Bucharest.

On the topic of the NATO operation in Afghanistan, which is also on the agenda of the meeting, Aurescu said that Romania is committed to maintaining the presence of 670 troops in Afghanistan and that any adjustment of this presence will take place only in close coordination between all allies, but that it will also depend on the conditions on the ground and on the evolution of the inter-Afghan peace negotiations.
