The legal framework for the inventory and protection of all virgin forests in Romania is ready

The Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forestry (MMAP) is creating the legal framework for the inventory and protection of all virgin forests in Romania, with the signing of the Ministerial Order that will regulate this aspect, Environment Minister Cristiana Pasca Palmer announced on Tuesday on her own Facebook page.

"Since taking office I have wanted to see a virgin forest, precisely because Romania has the largest area of virgin forests in Europe, but also because many of these do not yet have a proper protection system. I have asked the Forestry Department in the Ministry of Environment to propose solutions for protecting all virgin forests that still exist in Romania (...) The good news that I want to give you today [Tuesday, July 12, 2016] is that I have signed Ministerial Order by which the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forestry creates the legal framework for inventorying and placing under protection all virgin forests in Romania (...)," Pasca Palmer writes.

According to the document, the permanent updating of the Catalogue is made by the central public authority responsible for forestry, with such a document being of public interest and posted on the website of the respective entity.

According to Romsilva data, in Romania the estimated number of hectares with virgin forests stands around 200,000 - 300,000, areas that must be checked through the authority's indicators.
