The Romanians’ exodus: în 10 years, 3.4 million Romanians, approximately 17% of the population, have left the country
The estimates connected to the number of Romanians who left the country are approximately 3.4 million people between 2007 and 2017, figure which places Romanian second in the world, after Syria as regards migration, according to UN said Luciana Lazarescu from the Centre for research and documentation in the domain of integration of migrants (CDCDI) in the final conference of the international research project ‘Move’.
There is no discussion about the compensation of emigration through immigration, as on 31.12.2017 in Romania there were approximately 117,000 foreigners, out of whom 3,900 people with international protection, refugees or other kind of protection. The demands for politica asylum increased from 1,500 in the previous years to4,820 in 2017.
Romania has among the smallest percentages of residents from outside the EU, 0.3% thus being place on the last ranks in the EU for this domain, together with Slovenia and Slovakia. From all the foreigners who immigrate in Romania, only 9% come on the basis of a work contract. The main reasons for which the foreigners come to Romania are family reunion (43%) and for studies – 23%.
The share of those who came to Romania through international protection programmes is much smaller than in other states, such as Germany for example. In Romania 5% of the foreigners are people with international protection according to the General Inspectorate for Immigration.
The number of foreigners from outside the EU who choose Romania is a small one as they face several difficulties: language barrier, the limit for the average salary for migrants, deficitary registration of the foreigners in the statistics of the institutions with attributions in the domain of work.
In the context of the crisis of workforce,’ Romania has no serious evaluation of the deficit on the workforce market per sectors and occupations and it is far from having a systematic approach of immigration as a workforce and bumper for the ageing of the population’ said Luciana Lazarescu in the conference.
