Use of Romanian expertise in industrial projects, IT and communications, discussed by ForMin Comanescu with UNIDO director
Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu on Wednesday received Director General of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Li Yong.
"The parties' wish to further the traditional collaboration between Romania and UNIDO was reaffirmed, using the Romanian expertise within some projects in industry, IT&C, energy and the environment," reads a Foreign Affair Ministry (MAE) release, quoted by Agerpres.
Over 70 projects have been implemented in Romania until 2014, having totaled over 20 million dollars following the collaboration with the UNIDO which started in 1969.
The MAE shows that Minister Comanescu underscored the important role that the UNIDO has in the global implementation of Agenda 2030 and the Objectives on Sustainable Development related to its activity scope — sustainable and inclusive industrial development.
The Bucharest visit to the UNIDO high official is taking place in the context in which Romania is a member of the Industrial Development Board with a term expiring on December 31, 2017 and holds the vice chairmanship of the Council representing the group of states in Eastern Europe.
In 1966, the UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution 2152 (XXI) to establish the UNIDO as an autonomous body within the UN, transformed into a specialized body in 1975. The organization includes 170 member states and has offices in Vienna (headquarters), Geneva, Brussels and New York (offices).
Being the sole specialized agency within the UN system with the mandate to promote sustainable industrial development, the UNIDO offers a wide range of services to its member states to support industrial development and to improve economic and ecological efficiency. The support mainly goes to small—and medium-sized enterprises.
The 15th General Conference of UNIDO (Lima, December 2 to 6, 2013) set the current direction of the organization by adopting a Strategic Guidance Document.
