German Interior Minister: It is not the moment for Romania and Bulgaria to enter Schengen
Hans-Peter Friedrich, the German Interior minister, declared on Thursday that the progress made by Romania and Bulgaria are not enough and it is not the moment for the two countries to enter Schengen.
“In our opinion, it is not the moment to eliminate border control for the two countries”, said Hand Peter Friedrich in Brussels, before the meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council, “Die Welt” writes.
The German official pointed out that Romania and Bulgaria have made “some progress”, which is “not enough to fulfill legal conditions allowing accession to Schengen.”“I cannot say now when the moment of two countries’ accession may come”, he said when asked about a possible data of Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen.
Interior ministers discuss at JAI Council about the present situation of the application of Schengen dispositions by Romania and Bulgaria, excluding the vote in case there are countries opposing the accession, the Committee of Permanent Representatives decided on Wednesday.
Upon Mediafax request, the Dutch Embassy to Bucharest said the official stand of the Netherlands towards the accession of the two countries to Schengen had not changed lately.“Nothing has changed in Holland’s position”, said the Embassy, adding that the Hague government “will wait for the MCV report before establishing its stand toward the two countries’ accession to Schengen together with other member states.”
The MCV Report will be published in January 2014.
