The Republic of Moldova recognizes Romanian as official language
Moldova's Constitutional Court has ruled that the "Moldovan" language will be replaced by Romanian as the former Soviet republic's official tongue. Moldova's 1991 Declaration of Independence stated that Romanian was the new country's language, but the Constitution of 1994 changed that to "Moldovan."
The decision comes a day after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry paid a short visit to Moldova.
Last week Moldova's pro-European government initialed an Association Agreement with the European Union.
Romania's President Traian Basescu on Thursday said that the European Union would have two states with Romanian as official language and thanked the initiators and the constitutional judges of the Republic of Moldova who decided that the official language of the neighbour state was Romanian.
'I am voicing my gratitude to the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova, but also to the measure initiators - Deputy Ana Guta and Mr Ghimpu's Party, the ones who filed with the CC a request on the correction of the constitutional realities of article 13 of the Republic of Moldova Constitution, which established the Republic of Moldova's official language as the Moldovan language. The decision today established that the official language of the Republic of Moldova is the Romanian language,' Basescu showed.
He underscored that 'it is an act of justice' to history and to those in the Republic of Moldova who feel Romanian. Basescu also said that the implications were very profound.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Thursday hailed the decision of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova regarding the recognition of the Romanian language as the official language of the state.

I'm very happy to see that, along many other official decisions and projects that got materialized between Romania and Moldova in the latest while, from today on we are also reunited through our official language, the language that both countries have been speaking for centuries.
Victor Ponta added that the decision of the CC in Chisinau is a symbolic one, ‘which completes the good news the citizens of the Republic of Moldova received in the latest period'.‘We speak the same language, we feel with the same soul, so that our destinies must be common too, inside the European Union', said Prime Minister Victor Ponta.
