SURVEY: Isarescu, Ponta, Oprescu top rankings of confidence in political personalities

Mugur Isarescu, Victor Ponta and Sorin Oprescu top the first three rankings of confidence in political personalities, a survey conducted in November by INSCOP Research has found.

Mugur Isarescu tops the confidence rankings with 43% (compared to 40.9% recorded in September's survey). He is followed in the rankings by Prime Minister Victor Ponta, with 38.5% confidence (39% in September) and Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu, with 34.3% (33.5% confidence in September).

The fourth ranking is held by Sibiu Mayor Klaus Iohannis, with 33.8% confidence (32.9% in September), followed by Crin Antonescu - 30% (30.8% in September), and Calin Popescu Tariceanu - 28.1% (27.8% in September). Next comes Mircea Geoana, with 24.8% (22.6% in September).

Following in the rankings are Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, with 24.2% confidence (24% in September) and Traian Basescu, with 23.3% (24.5% in September).

Ponta tops Romanians' options for presidential elections

Prime Minister Victor Ponta leads the Romanians' options for the presidential elections scheduled next year with 19.1 percent and coming behind him are Senate Speaker Crin Antonescu with 17.8 percent and National Bank of Romania Governor Mugur Isarescu with 7.2 percent. Isarescu, however, would win a possible second round of voting, shows a poll conducted by INSCOP Research in November.

Should elections for the president of Romania be held next Sunday, the Romanians would vote for Social Democrat (PSD) leader Ponta at 19.1 percent. Ranking next are Liberal head Antonescu with 17.8 percent, Isarescu with 7.2 percent, former Foreign Minister and PM Mihai Razvan Ungureanu (7.1 pct), Social Democrat Mircea Geoana (3.8 pct), Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu (3.7 pct) and incumbent President Traian Basescu (3.3 pct), who, however, will be ending his second term in office and cannot seek re-election.

Trailing at the bottom of the rankings are Greater Romania Party (PRM) leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor (2.7 pct), Democratic Liberal Elena Udrea, a former Tourism Minister (2.2 pct), television mogul Dan Diaconescu (2.1 pct), Sibiu Mayor Klaus Iohannis (2.1 pct), former Democratic Liberal PM Emil Boc (1.2 pct) and Democratic Liberal senior leader Catalin Predoiu, a former Justice Minister (1.1 pct).

Should there be a runoff between Ponta and Antonescu, 56.3 percent of the surveyed said they would vote for the prime minister and 43.4 percent for the Liberal leader.

The Central Bank governor would win a presidential runoff against Ponta 52.7 percent to 47.3 percent respectively and he would defeat Antonescu 62.9 percent to 37.1 percent.

Ponta is seen gaining a second round of voting against Ungureanu 60.1 percent to 39.9 percent, while Antonescu would win 52.4 percent to 47.6 percent against the current Civic Force leader.

Furthermore, the Liberal head would win a runoff against Predoiu 68.7 percent to 31.3 percent. The incumbent prime minister would also defeat Predoiu in a runoff 69.5 percent to 30.5 percent.

When asked whether they think the ruling Social Democrats (PSD) would field their own candidate to president, 54.4 percent of the polled answered yes, 18.8 percent do not believe the PSD would field their own contestant, while 26.8 percent did not have an opinion.

The survey was conducted by INSCOP Research, November 2013, 7 to 14, on a sample of 1,055 people, being representative for the Romanian population aged 18 and over. It was commissioned by the Adevarul daily and it carries a maximum admitted error of the figures of plus/minus 3 percent and 95 percent reliability.
