Medicine consumption in Romania is four times lower than the European level

The consumption of medicine with prescription is in Romania for 100 euroinhabitant, four times lower than the rest of Europe, according to the data given by Mihaela Mosnegutu, medical manager of Antibiotice Iasi, during the Commercial Forum of Pharma Industry in Romania, organised by Blue Business Media. On average, at European level, each patient consumes medicine with prescription of 450 euro.

The allocation of GDP for health expenses places Romania at mid global average, but at the level of Puerto Rico ( state associated with the US). The share in the GDP of health and medicine expenditure was in 2008 of 4.2%, in 2009 it was 3.2% and in 2010 it was 3%.

The value of expenditure with health and medicine per inhabitant in Romania evolved from 280 euro in 2008 to 275 euro in 2010 and 230 euro in 2011. For compensated medicine there is almost 7-8% of the health budget.

Half of the volume of medicine consumed in the EU is generic, which generates savings of 18-20 billion euro in the health system. In Romania, the rhythm of growth of the market of generics is inferior to that of growth of the innovative medicine market ( with higher costs due to the patent), being situated almost at half.

The representative of the Antibiotice Iasi showed that in 2009 each percentage of growth of medicine consumption would have generated savings of 65 million lei and in 2010 each percentage of growth would have led to savings of 90 million lei.
