Romania and Bulgaria risk EU sanctions because of ferryboat between Calarasi and Silistra
Romania and Bulgaria risk EU sanctions because of the ferryboat line between Calarasi and Silistra, Vladimir Iankov, the Prefect of Bulgarian Silistra County, told Agerpres.
The terminal was inaugurated in 2007, but one year elapsed this month since the ferry line is not working because of misunderstandings between the two private companies, the Bulgarian and the Romanian one, which operates it. In the building of ferry infrastructure on the two Danube banks more than 10 million euros were invested, money from EU funds, and it is not excluded that the two countries would be forced to return it to the Community budget. It is a great pity that the infrastructure in which such an amount of European contributors' money was invested stays idle, Iankov stressed.
Despite the two meetings between the local administrations of Silistra and Calarasi counties, which were held last year and attended by representatives of the two leasing companies, no solution was found.
The Prefect of Silistra County said he plans to organize a new meeting with participation of central and local authorities of Romania and Bulgaria. The meeting would take place on March 29, in Silistra.
'I address an appeal to AGERPRES Agency to inform the public in Romania, and especially in the County of Calarasi, about this problem because it is in our common interest to have a connecting line between the two counties', said Iankov, who thinks that this issue cannot be solved otherwise than together.
